Mission:
Citizens For Choice promotes reproductive justice through education, healthcare access and advocacy. We exist to inform and enable choice.
Our Vision:
Citizens For Choice envisions the day when everyone of reproductive age has access to affordable, confidential family planning services, current medical knowledge, and reproductive healthcare.
Our vision is a community and world which work together to support reproductive justice for all, empowering and honoring individual choice.
History:
In 1989, a coalition of three women’s organizations of Nevada County, the League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Women and Business and Professional Women, founded Nevada County Citizens for Choice. Their goal was to support reproductive choice by providing comprehensive, unbiased family planning information, education, and charitable services to the public. Their primary focus was protecting a women’s right to make medical decisions regarding her body, in private, and in a non-judgmental environment.
Nevada County Citizens for Choice became an independent organization in 1992. In 2001, we incorporated as a California public benefit corporation, for the specific purposes of providing to the public comprehensive, unbiased family planning information, education, and charitable services in support of reproductive rights. We also became a section 501( c) (3) charitable organization under the Internal Revenue Code, a tax-exempt nonprofit corporation.
In 2006, Citizens for Choice opened The Clinic!, staffed by medical professionals provided by Women’s Health Specialists of Chico and supported financially by C4C. Originally operating two days a week, The Clinic! expanded in 2021 to operating four days a week with a full-time medical provider. In response to the Covid 19 pandemic, Women’s Health Specialists began offering Telehealth visits in 2020. As of mid-2022, the clinic is averaging nearly 100 monthly visits and is open five days a week. Services span the range from contraception to STD testing and treatment to medication abortions.
