STATEMENT ON THE OVERRULING OF ROE
June 24, 2022 – a day that will forever be etched in our memories. The day the Supreme Court took away the Constitutional right for a birthing person to choose abortion. The right for a woman to control her own body. The right to make her own medical decisions. The right to determine her own health, life and future — without the government having the right to say she cannot.
Some are consumed by righteous anger. Others by despair. Others by sorrow, knowing in our bones what lack of abortion access will mean to people’s everyday lives. Forced pregnancy and coerced parenthood are not in anyone’s best interests. People deserve more respect and dignity than that. We honor and share the outrage many feel but recognize that we must move beyond feelings.
We must channel our emotions, as people of conscience do, to make positive things happen. We vow to work tirelessly to expand abortion access and abortion protections in California and Nevada County. We support a state constitutional amendment to enshrine rights to abortion and contraception. And we commit, for as long as we exist, to work toward our vision of safe, legal, affordable abortion access for all Americans. For the near future, we and our clinic partner Women’s Health Specialists are preparing for the influx of out-of-state women seeking abortion care in California. The need will be great, with over 30 million women living in 26 anti-abortion states, newly empowered by the overruling of Roe.
You can help make positive change by supporting us in those efforts. If our pro-choice mission reflects your values and beliefs, we ask that you support us and what we work toward – including the fundamental right to safe, legal abortion care.
We ask you to stand with us because it’s only together, standing united, that we can succeed in the new Post-Roe world of abortion bans.
In gratitude for all you do to support us and reproductive health, rights, and justice,
Elaine L. Sierra, J.D.
