In a landmark move, an FDA advisory committee voted unanimously on May 10, 2023, to allow a birth control pill to be offered over the counter (OTC). That recommendation goes to the FDA for a final decision on whether to allow Opill, a progestin-only contraceptive pill, to be dispensed over the counter. Citizens for Choice applauds the move toward providing affordable access to a birth control pill with a proven record of safety and efficacy. It would be of most benefit to those denied or delayed access to a widely used form of birth control (pills) to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. We strongly urge the FDA to act quickly in approving over-the-counter access to Opill.
